Takeaways: After rushing to give Tucker Megadeal, MSU slips up

Michigan State blew up the college football coaching market last season by giving Mel Tucker a massive 10-year contract as the Spartans started 9-1 in his sophomore season. That was a bit confusing at the time. After the Spartans were rolled over for the second straight week, falling to 4-3 in their last seven games, the 10-year mega deal looks even more questionable. The coach-as-savior mentality is rampant in college football, causing desperate schools to make costly, risky decisions.

Judge still at 60, homerless in episode 4, Yanks win 7-5

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge went without a homer for the fourth consecutive year, falling a step short of Roger Maris’ American League record of 61 as the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 7-5 to tie theirs first AL East title since 2019. Richter was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts and a walk. Since sparking a comeback in the ninth inning on Tuesday with 60th place, Judge is 3 to 13 with two doubles, five walks and six strikeouts. After Judge slammed in seventh, Anthony Rizzo followed up with a double-barreled homer from John Schreiber that broke a 5-5 tie.

Castillo, Mariners agree to 5-year, $108 million deal through 27

SEATTLE (AP) — Right-hander Luis Castillo agreed to a five-year, $108 million deal with the Seattle Mariners beginning next season and gave up a chance to become a free agent after the 2023 World Series. The deal includes an option for 2028, which could take the six-season deal to $133 million. Castillo was the big takeover for the Mariners when they brought him out of Cincinnati. The hope was that Castillo would make the difference in Seattle’s push to end baseball’s longest playoff drought and that the Mariners could convince him to stay longer.

Achane leads No. 23 Texas A&M past No. 10 Arkansas, 23-21

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Devon Achane rushed for 159 yards and a touchdown, Demani Richardson sprinted the final 82 yards with a ferocious fumble return for another score, and No. 23 Texas A&M beat No. 10 Arkansas 23-21. The Razorbacks had a chance to take the lead with 1:30 left, but Cam Little’s 42-yard field goal attempt hit near the top of the right post. Both teams are 3:1. The Razorbacks built an early 14-0 lead but missed a straight 4-0 start for the first time since the late 1980s. Texas A&M has had back-to-back wins against ranked teams since losing to Appalachian State.

Federer, Nadal, Djokovic have set new standards for the next generations

LONDON (AP) – Here’s one way to look at what Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and the now-retired Roger Federer have accomplished: The group known as the Big Three of men’s tennis have amassed so many Grand Slam titles that it seems unlikely that anyone will reach the standards they set. Certainly not any time soon. The professional level of the sport began its post-Federer life on Saturday after the last game of his career. Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and recently retired Serena Williams have proven that it’s possible to dominate for decades. There are lessons that aspiring players can learn from their example.

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AP) — Nate Wiggins interrupted Sam Hartman’s fourth down pass in the end zone to help No. 5 Clemson fend off Wake Forest No. 21 51-45 in double overtime. The US leads the Presidents Cup as Kim adds a spark to the Internationals

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — The Americans have what appears to be a commanding lead in the Presidents Cup. They are 11-7 with only 12 singles games to play at Quail Hollow. Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas are 4-0 in team games. No American tandem has done that since Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker. But 20-year-old Tom Kim gave the international team the spark they needed. He made a fist-pumping, hat-slapping birdie on the final hole to a 1-up win over Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele. The Internationals won five of the eight games and took the lead.
