Coimbatore teenager attempts suicide after being ‘threatened’ by police officer over his WhatsApp status | Coimbatore News

COIMBATORE: A Hindu Munnani member attempted suicide in Coimbatore on Wednesday after a police sub-inspector allegedly threatened and berated him over the phone for challenging a scene from actor Dhanush’s Maari film as his WhatsApp status, who challenged the SI.
The Munnani Hindu member, identified as K. Naveen, 27, from Nanjundapuram, was admitted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
Hindu Munnani members said Naveen and more than seven youths gathered outside a temple around 10:45 p.m. Tuesday to celebrate the birthday of one of them. Podanur Police Sub-Inspector Syed Ali and his team were out and about in the area. The SI saw the youths and advised them to go home. The youths replied to the police that their houses were in the same area and what their problem was when they stood in front of the temple.
One of the youths was allegedly dragged into the police jeep and all youths returned to their homes.
Meanwhile, Naveen kept a scene from actor Dhanush’s Maari film as her WhatsApp status. In the scene, Dhanush says, “Tell the cop I’d just be here. This area can be controlled by the police, but I’m out of control.” Naveen dedicated the scene to the SI.
Someone took a screenshot of the video and sent it to Sub-Inspector Syed Ali. The SI contacted Naveen by phone and verbally abused him.
“The Sub-Inspector of Police threatened and verbally abused Naveen. Naveen consumed cow dung powder (a chemical dye) on Wednesday and was admitted to CMCH,” said Dhanabal, a spokesman for the Hindu Munnani in Coimbatore district.
