The re-election of Pastor Tom Tucker of South Carolina on June 14th as vice chairman of the Executive Committee (EC) of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) was on the 16th
The EC elected Tucker as vice-chairman for a second term during its meeting on Monday, knowing that while his term is about to expire, his term is about to expire and that he will not be among the nominees for the EC for the coming year and that he is taking office Can only fill in if Boten modified the 2021 Nominations Committee report to include Tucker among the nominees.
Ambassador Lewis Richerson, pastor of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, filed a motion Wednesday to approve Tucker, a South Carolina evangelist, in place of nominee David Sons, senior pastor of Lake Murray Baptist Church in Lexington, SC Richerson nominate said it was customary for EC members to be nominated for two consecutive terms.
But Andrew Hopper, Chairman of the nominations committee and pastor of Mercy Hill Church in Greensboro, NC, said in response that the decision to expel Tucker from nominees was a unanimous decision made more than a year ago.
His term of office was supposed to expire in 2020, but was extended by one year due to the cancellation of the 2020 SBC annual meeting due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tucker was then elected vice chairman of the EC in June 2020.
âOur committee has tried to appreciate the way the statutes and these things are written and the traditions that are important to all of us. And I think we succeeded, âsaid Hopper. “In this situation, our committee, and especially our South Carolina nominators, chose not to do this for one simple reason.”
Hopper noted that while Tucker had only served one full term – plus the extra year after the 2020 Annual Meeting was canceled – Tucker began his tenure in the EC when he filled a vacancy for an EC slot in an earlier term that had two more years.
“While you are right that Mr. Tucker had served one term, he arrived in an earlier term,” said Hopper. âHe not only served two years of an earlier term, but then served his full term and was to receive another term. So it’s not really about a second term. What we are talking about is a kind of super term – a long-term one. “
At its meeting on Monday, the European Commission voted Tucker over Oklahoma doctor Micah Nix. The EC is expected to hold a vice-chair election at its next convened meeting, scheduled for September, to fill the vacancy.
Tucker is a member of the Steering Board of the Conservative Baptist Network.
