Things always come back to Troy University for Judy and Robert Cary.
The couple’s 57-year marriage began here when they were college students in the 1960s. The couple moved to Pensacola, Florida, where Robert worked in education and Judy as a nurse, but retirement brought her back to Troy, to a house just a few blocks from campus.
Thanks to two endowed scholarships in their name, Robert and Judy’s legacy will now continue in the lives of future nursing and education graduates from Troy University.
Robert said he and Judy are grateful to be able to help future nursing and education students by establishing an endowment scholarship at Troy University.
“We didn’t have any children ourselves, so we thought we could afford to offer help and support to someone else,” Robert said.
Robert arrived at what was then Troy State College in 1963, fresh out of the US Army. He was living with a local family who one Sunday very much insisted that he come to church with them. Turns out they wanted him to meet someone.
“You introduced me to this nice young lady,” said Robert. “And that was Judy.”
Although Judy was a student at Birmingham Baptist Nursing School, their relationship blossomed and the couple married in 1967. When Robert graduated, the couple moved to Pensacola, where Robert taught fifth grade at a local elementary school. He was soon appointed principal of another school and held that position at several schools in the city over a career spanning more than 30 years.
During this time, Judy worked as a registered nurse at a local OB/GYN practice, a job Robert said she was passionate about.
“She gave birth to many babies in Pensacola,” he said.
Retirement brought the couple back to Troy, and Robert said they enjoyed being so close to the campus and seeing how much it had changed.
“I still enjoy driving around the campus, looking at the buildings and having so many good memories,” he said.
The couple launched their first joint scholarship in 2017. The Judy and Robert Cary Academic Endowed Scholarship supports both education and nursing majors. Judy passed away in November 2021 and that year Robert decided to create a second scholarship, the Judy and Robert Cary Nursing Endowed Scholarship, solely focused on helping future healthcare workers.
“I just hope I can help a needy student get their nursing degree,” Robert said.
