“I want you to think of me as a Fijian because I am. If you can play rugby in Japan, I can play politics in Fiji. I have a great passion for taking this country to a new level; I have many ideas to take this country to new heights.”
National Federation Party provisional candidate Hiroshi Taniguchi has broken his silence and apologized to the people of Fiji. He made the remarks during a press conference at Coffee Hub in Nadi on Saturday night.
As of Thursday morning, he was no longer an NFP interim candidate after he was served with his resignation letter over his controversial comments on iTaukei-Land, the 20 percent reduction in public sector staff and other anti-party matters.
“My expression was misinterpreted and if you feel I have offended you then I apologize. I’m very sorry,” he said.

“I’m really saddened by the wrong information. I really wish the Mataqali would be more involved in all decisions regarding their country,” he said.
“They should have more opportunities to decide what to do with their country on this issue.”
Termination of NFP
Mr Taniguchi criticized the party for not giving him a fair chance to explain himself.
Mr. Taniguchi claims his resignation from the NFP was straightforward and he claims that Biman Prasad’s NFP is not a democratic party anyway.
“I was only fired by Biman or one or two other members. They didn’t even give me a chance to say anything; Biman gave no hearing, no subpoena,” he said.
“I thought NFP was a democratic party, so why wasn’t I given an audience with other members for clarification?” He added that after a few interviews, he was selected by a party selection committee.”
He said it took almost three months before he was nominated as a preliminary candidate by the party’s selection committee. He also claimed that Mr Prasad often called his wife and spoke to her harshly.
“In fact, it had nothing to do with my candidacy,” he said.
“It is not in our Japanese culture to decline a call from someone whose position is higher or older.”
“She couldn’t tell me what was going on for a long time. I knew it when my wife apologetically told me.
I feel very sorry for her. Honestly she was stressed out with his call and text until I told her to delete her Viber app.
“Many of my friends, including some NFP candidates, told me he’s just jealous. I was an NFP candidate and thought I could help create a new wind with NFP.”
This is not the end of my life; This is not the end of my political career. I will not give up! “Biman shakes Rabuka’s hand, but Biman kicks me out.
Mr. Prasad! Don’t you think that you are the first who should protect your party candidates and party members? It looks like you’re the first to kick me out.
future plans
Mr Taniguchi has lived in Fiji for 18 years but officially immigrated here in 2014, the year he became a Fijian citizen.
“I am now a Fijian. I will continue to help the people of this country as I have done for the past 18 years. Whether I have an MP or not, I will continue to do my best to support our people and our country and my rugby boys.”
“I want you to think of me as a Fijian because I am. If you can play rugby in Japan, I can play politics in Fiji. I have a great passion for taking this country to a new level; I have many ideas to take this country to new heights.”
I need your understanding and I need your support.”
“To all who liked my ideologies, I intend to continue running in the elections. I firmly believe in making things better in Fiji with my experience and ideas,” he said.
Attempts to obtain comment from NFP leader Prasad have been unsuccessful as this issue goes to press.
