Turning on notifications on Facebook Messenger is a great way to keep up with the messages and calls that you are receiving. It also eliminates the need to check them manually and reduces the chance of missing important text. But as with most apps, Messenger can’t send these notifications sometimes.

Figuring out how to fix notification issues in Messenger can become quite a chore if you don’t know where to look. To help you, we have compiled a list of solutions to help you solve the notification problem in Facebook Messenger. So let’s start.
1. Check your internet connection
You can start troubleshooting by checking the internet connection on your phone. An inconsistent or poor internet connection is often the reason why an app cannot send push notifications. Do a quick speed test to check your internet connection.
2. Check the phone notification settings
Next, you can try checking the notification settings on your Android or iPhone to make sure that Facebook Messenger is allowed to send push notifications on your phone. Here is how.
Android
Step 1: Press and hold the app icon and select App info from the menu that appears.

Step 2: Go to Notifications on the app info page and toggle the All Messenger notifications option on. Also take a look at the notification settings.

iPhone
Step 1: Open Settings and scroll down to tap Messenger.

Step 2: Now go to Notifications and toggle the Allow Notification option on. Make sure the app is also allowed to send alerts on the lock screen, notification center, and banners.

3. Check the in-app notification settings
Aside from checking the notification settings on your phone, you’ll also need to check the in-app settings to enable notifications from there. Here is how.
Step 1: Launch the Messenger app on your phone and tap your profile picture in the top left.

Step 2: Scroll down to Settings and tap Notifications & sounds. Make sure the notifications are turned on.

4. Enable background updates for the app
Background app refresh is a feature that allows apps like Messenger to work in the background and send push notifications. So if Messenger can’t send push notifications, you may have turned off background data usage for that app. If so, here’s how to enable it.
Android
Step 1: Press and hold the Messenger icon and select App Info from the menu that appears.
Step 2: Now go to “Mobile data and WLAN” and activate the switches next to “Background data” and “Unrestricted data usage”.

iPhone
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your phone, navigate to General and tap Background App Update.

Step 2: Scroll down to Messenger to toggle the switch on for it.

5. Disable “Do Not Disturb”
Do Not Disturb is a handy feature found on most phones these days. When enabled, all notifications from apps and contacts are effectively disabled. So, if you accidentally turned on DND on your Android or iPhone, you may not receive any notifications from them including Facebook Messenger.
Android
To turn Do Not Disturb off on Android, open Settings and go to Sound. Now tap on Do Not Disturb and turn it off.

iPhone
To turn off focus mode on iPhone, open the Settings app and go to Focus. Now tap on the Do Not Disturb option.

Finally, turn off the switch next to the Do Not Disturb option.

6. Mute contacts
If Messenger isn’t sending notifications for someone’s chat, be sure to check that you’ve muted that contact. In this case, you can follow the steps below to unmute this contact.
Step 1: Open the Messenger app on your phone. Here you can see the crossed out bell icon next to muted chats.
Step 2: Press and hold the conversation and select Clear Notifications from the menu.

7. Update Facebook Messenger
Facebook Messenger regularly receives app updates for Android and iPhone. These updates often bring bug fixes and improvements. So if the notification problem is because of an app bug, updating to the latest version will fix the problem.
8. Reinstall Facebook Messenger
If the problem persists even after updating the app, you’ll need to uninstall and reinstall the Messenger app. This should remove all of the app data from your phone, including the cache, and restart it.
