NEW YORK (AP) – LOOKING AHEAD TO SATURDAY
The men’s number 1, Novak Djokovic, will continue his hunt for the calendar Grand Slam when he takes on Kei Nishikori. Djokovic has won all 23 matches he played in the four most important tennis tournaments in 2021. That means he’s five wins away from a perfect 28-0 mark that would make him the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win all four majors of individual tennis championships in one season. Djokovic stands 17-2 against Nishikori, including 16 straight wins. Djokovic would be the first man since 1969 to win a Grand Slam in a calendar year and, with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, break for the most major men’s titles if he wins the tournament. He shared her at 20 after winning this year’s Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon. The Americans Reilly Opelka and Jack Sock are also trying to get ahead with the men. Women’s number 1 Ash Barty tried to reach the quarterfinals for the first time in her US Open career when she played against Shelby Rogers. Barty has a 5-0 career against Rogers with four wins over three months this year. Barty skipped the tournament last year when it was played without fans.
